Along with her, were Mr. Jorge Cardenas, His Excellency the Ambassador of Bolivia in India, and Special Guest Mr. Ton Sinh Thanh, His Excellency the Ambassador of Vietnam in India. Kolkata Bloggers is extremely proud to be the Online Partners of this Literary Celebration of humungous proportions. The Kolkata Book Fair has taken its place in the city’s history as a cultural unifying force that brings all men and women from the city and beyond to this fortnight of knowledge and book-reading. From Kolkata Bloggers, we have been managing and maintaining the official Kolkata Bloggers website, along with their social media activity and online presence. At the inauguration, we were present to provide a live stream of the entire inauguration ceremony on our YouTube channel, and to tweet live from the Milan Mela venue.
The inauguration started with Ambassadors from Bolivia and Vietnam speaking about their hopes for encouraging book reading. Noted Bolivian author and inaugurator for the Book Fair 2016 Ms. Magela Baudoin spoke about her delight at being a part of one of the largest Book Fairs in the world. Chief Guest Smt. Mamata Banerjee spoke about how books have essentially become a part of our heritage and how the International Kolkata Book Fair has carved its own place in Bengal’s history. She then presented the “Sahitya Samman Award” to veteran author Nimai Bhattacharya for his contribution to the field of literature.
After a performance of the Book Fair anthem, the Chief Guest along with other dignitaries launched several books that would debut at the Kolkata Book Fair, including ten books by Smt. Mamata Banerjee herself. These books can be found throughout the Book Fair at most notable stalls.
The Book Fair was then formally inaugurated by the Guest Inaugurator, eminent Bolivian novelist Ms. Magela Baudoin, by ceremoniously banging the gavel to signify the Book Fair open. The association of Kolkata Bloggers gives us great pleasure due to the message that the International Kolkata Book Fair stands for – that only by acquiring knowledge can one attain their potential. We hope this partnership proves fruitful for us as organizers, as well as for the general masses. We would encourage our bloggers to definitely visit the Milan Mela grounds between 26th January and 7th February, to grasp the hub of knowledge that now resides at the heart of Kolkata.
